How to read USB-C PD on a charger box
USB Power Delivery is a contract between charger and device, not a promise that every cable will deliver the printed wattage.

The box says 65W USB-C PD. That is a maximum the charger can offer under the USB Power Delivery spec. The phone, laptop, and cable each have to agree to a profile. If any one of them cannot, you get a lower wattage and a warmer brick.
What PD is
USB Power Delivery is a protocol. After a USB-C plug is seated, the charger and the device exchange capabilities and pick a voltage/current pair. Common fixed PD voltages include 5V, 9V, 15V, and 20V. Wattage is voltage times current.
A “65W” label usually means the highest advertised PDO (power data object) on one port, often 20V × 3.25A.
Three things the box hides
Port sharing. A two-port 65W charger is often 65W combined. Two laptops will not each get 65W.
PPS. Programmable Power Supply is an extra PD mode that lets some phones request finer voltage steps. A charger can be PD without being PPS. If the phone’s fast-charge marketing assumes PPS, a generic PD brick will look “slow” even though it is in spec.
The cable. USB-C cables are not interchangeable at high current. E-marked cables are required above certain current/voltage combinations. A $3 cable can silently cap a 65W brick at 15W or 27W.
A checklist before you buy
- The device’s own wattage: look up the OEM charger, not a forum guess.
- Single-port vs shared-port total.
- Whether the device wants PPS (many Android phones) or a fixed 20V PDO (many laptops).
- Cable rating printed on the jacket or in the listing, not inferred from the plug shape.
If a review on this site measures a charger, it will say which cable was in the loop. The logo on the box is the start of the spec, not the end of it.
