What Odysseus actually is
Odysseus is a self-hosted AI workspace: chat, agents, documents, email, notes, calendar, and Deep Research on your machine. AGPL. Docker on port 7000. Local models stay local; API models do not.

Odysseus is a self-hosted AI workspace. The GitHub tagline is chat, agents, research, documents, email, notes, calendar, and local model workflows. It is not a new model. It is a Docker app that talks to whatever LLM you point it at.
Felix Kjellberg (PewDiePie) published it on May 31, 2026. The repo now lives at odysseus-dev/odysseus. GitHub showed about 85,900 stars when this was checked. The license is AGPL-3.0-or-later. The landing page says no telemetry.
Self-hosted is not the same as fully local. If you attach OpenAI, Anthropic, or OpenRouter, those prompts leave the box. Privacy is the backends you choose.
What the README lists
- Chat + agents with local or API models, tools, MCP, files, shell, skills, and memory
- Cookbook for hardware-aware model picks, downloads, and serving. The site claims 270+ catalogued models
- Deep Research: search, read sources, write a report
- Compare: one prompt, several models, including a blind side-by-side
- Documents: Markdown, HTML, CSV, syntax highlighting, AI edits
- Email: IMAP/SMTP, summaries, tags, reply drafts
- Notes, tasks, calendar: todos, scheduled agent tasks, CalDAV
- Extras: image gallery/editor, themes, uploads, web search, 2FA
The pitch is one UI instead of chat here, mail there, calendar somewhere else. The agent can use those surfaces if you let it. Shell and files are powerful. That is also the risk.
Install
dev is the default branch and gets changes first. The README says use main if you want the more curated tree. There is no tagged Releases page.
git clone --branch main https://github.com/odysseus-dev/odysseus.git
cd odysseus
cp .env.example .env
docker compose up -d --buildWhen the containers are healthy, open http://localhost:7000. The first admin password is in docker compose logs odysseus. Native Windows and macOS launchers, GPU compose files, and HTTPS notes live in the setup guide.
What it is not
It is not a finished SaaS. The default dev branch can break. Open issues cover tool calling, IMAP, scheduled tasks, and MCP. You run Docker, backups, updates, and GPU drivers yourself.
The interesting claim is ownership of the workspace, not a smarter chat box. Documents and mail stay on your server until you send a request to a cloud model. If that split is the job, Odysseus is the experiment. If you want a product that just works, this is still a fast-moving repo.
