
What a Perseid peak actually means

A Perseid peak is the densest part of a debris stream, not a switch that turns the shower off. In 2026 the maximum over Korea fell in daylight, but the stream is still open through August 24.

A meteor shower is Earth flying through leftover dust. The peak is where that stream is densest. It is not a switch. After the maximum, the hourly count falls. It does not go to zero on the next night.
The 2026 Perseids are a clean example. The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute lists the maximum at 12:00 KST on August 13. That is noon over Korea. Nobody here could see the exact maximum. The stream is still there. The International Meteor Organization gives the activity window as July 17 through August 24.
Times below are Korea Standard Time unless a source uses another clock.
What you are watching
Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle leaves a trail of dust each time it comes in toward the Sun. NASA’s Perseid page names that comet as the parent. The nucleus is large: about 26 kilometers across. Earth crosses the same trail every August. The grains hit the atmosphere at about 59 kilometers per second and burn. Those streaks are the Perseids.
The constellation name is a label, not a launch site. NASA is explicit: the constellation only tells you which shower you are looking at. The grains do not come from the star Perseus.
What a radiant is
The paths look parallel because the grains in one stream are moving the same way. Trace those paths backward on the sky and they appear to meet in a small patch. That patch is the radiant. For this shower it sits near Perseus, which is why the shower has that name.
Staring at the radiant is the wrong habit. A meteor that starts near the radiant is coming almost toward you, so the trail is short. A meteor far from the radiant draws a longer line. Watch a wide, open piece of sky. Binoculars and telescopes shrink the field. They are the wrong tools for a shower.
NASA says the Perseids are best before dawn in the Northern Hemisphere, and that some can appear from about 10 p.m.
What ZHR 100 is not
KASI and the IMO both quote a zenithal hourly rate of 100 for the Perseids. That is a laboratory number, not your night.
KASI defines ZHR as the count one person could see in one hour if stars to magnitude 6.5 are visible, the sky is clear, and the radiant is at the zenith. Those three conditions almost never arrive together. KASI says the number you actually see is smaller.
The IMO’s working figure for a rural site at maximum is about 30 to 50 shower meteors per hour. Near a city the count is lower. After the peak it is lower again. NASA’s 2026 note gives about 25 per hour under dark skies. Treat ZHR as a way to compare showers. Do not treat it as a quota.

The noon maximum is why the useful Korean nights were the ones around it: August 12–13 and August 13–14. After that the stream is thinner, not empty.
Moonlight is a second filter. New moon was 02:36 on August 13, so the young crescent set early for several evenings. First quarter is the morning of August 20. After that the moon is brighter and sets later. Seoul moonset times from KASI’s rise/set tables, as recorded for this note:

Other Korean cities differ by a few minutes. Check the city nearest the site before you leave.
If you go out
Give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes in the dark. A bright phone screen resets that. Lie back so you can see a large area. Do not stare only at Perseus.
Pick a place for the sky and for safety, not only for darkness on a map. You need legal night access, a wide horizon, and a way home. Avoid road shoulders, breakwater ends, and cliff edges. If the Korea Meteorological Administration forecast shows lightning, heavy rain, or strong wind for that grid, cancel.
The mechanism does not change in 2027. Earth will cross the same Swift-Tuttle stream. The clock time of maximum, the Moon’s phase, and the weather will be different. Read those three against the stream, not against the adjective “peak.”
